Pressure-induced electronic topological transitions in low dimensional superconductors

چکیده
The high-Tc cuprate superconductors are characterized by a quasitwo-dimensional layered structure where most of the physics relevant for high-Tc superconductivity is believed to take place. In such compounds, the unusual dependence of critical temperature Tc on external pressure results from the combination of the nonmonotonic dependence of Tc on hole doping or hole-doping distribution among inequivalent layers, and from an “intrinsic” contribution. After reviewing our work on the interplay among Tc, hole content, and pressure in the bilayered and multilayered cuprate superconductors, we will discuss how the proximity to an electronic topological transition (ETT) may give a microscopic justification of the “intrinsic” pressure dependence of Tc in the cuprates. An ETT takes place when some external agent, such as doping, hydrostatic pressure, or anisotropic strain, modifies the topology of the Fermi surface of an electronic system. As a function of the critical parameter z, measuring the distance of the chemical potential from the ETT, we recover a nonmonotonic behaviour of the superconducting gap at T = 0, regardless of the pairing symmetry of the order parameter. This is in agreement with the trend observed for Tc as a function of pressure and other material specific quantities in several high-Tc cuprates and other low dimensional superconductors. In the case of epitaxially strained cuprate thin films, we argue that an ETT can be driven by a strain-induced modification of the in-plane band structure, at constant hole content, at variance with a dopinginduced ETT, as is usually assumed. We also find that an increase of the inplane anisotropy enhances the effect of fluctuations above Tc on the normal-state transport properties, which is a fingerprint of quantum criticality at T = 0. Disorder-induced topological phase transitions in two-dimensional spin-orbit coupled superconductors
Normal superconductors with Rashba spin-orbit coupling have been explored as candidate systems of topological superconductors. Here we present a comparative theoretical study of the effects of different types of disorder on the topological phases of two-dimensional Rashba spin-orbit coupled superconductors. First, we show that a topologically trivial superconductor can be driven into a chiral t...

We study the two-dimensional topological superconductors of spinless fermions in a checkerboard-lattice Chern-insulator model. With the short-range p-wave superconducting pairing, multifarious topological quantum phase transitions have been found and several phases with high Chern numbers have been observed. We have established a rich phase diagram for these topological superconducting states. ...

Van derWaals layered transition metal dichalcogenides can exist in many di erent atomic and electronic phases. Such diverse polymorphisms not only provide a route for investigating novel topological states, such as quantum spin Hall insulators, superconductors and Weyl semimetals, but may also have applications in fields ranging from electronic and optical/quantum devices to electrochemical cat...

Variations in the band structures of the two-dimensional C60-polymers are studied, when π-conjugation conditions are changed. We investigate the rectangular and triangular polymers, in order to discuss metal-insulator transitions, using a semiempirical model with the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger type electronphonon interactions. We find that electronic structures change among directgap insulators and t...
متن کاملObservation of topological phase transitions in photonic quasicrystals.
Topological insulators and topological superconductors are distinguished by their bulk phase transitions and gapless states at a sharp boundary with the vacuum. Quasicrystals have recently been found to be topologically nontrivial. In quasicrystals, the bulk phase transitions occur in the same manner as standard topological materials, but their boundary phenomena are more subtle. In this Letter...
